Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i continues to excite Gusii leaders, who have been divided in the past following the exit of Simion Nyachae from politics.
Although he has strictly evaded politics and instead focused on his work, Gusii leaders are now rallying behind the powerful minister, who is also in charge of development in National Government.
Leaders led by Governor John Nyagarama and Senator Okong'o Mogeni on Monday endorsed Matiang'i as President Uhuru Kenyatta's successor in 2022.
"We cannot continue voting others yet we can also lead. As a tribe, we also have numbers. In future, we also want to lead. In fact, we have people who can perform like Matiang'i," Nyagarama said in a fundraiser at Tindereti.
On his part, Senator Mogeni asked big tribes to consider endorsing those from tribes, adding that even Matiang'i is up to the task of rescuing Kenya.
"Big tribes should consider backing those from small tribes. We have people who can perform. As Abagusii, we have Matiang'i and he has proved he can work," he said.
Similar sentiments were shared by Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama who asked Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua to consider forming a coalition with Matiang'i.
"The fact is, Matiang'i has performed well. He has always stood up to be counted. I urge Governor Mutua to consider working with him," he said.
Dr Matiang'i has often been praised by President Uhuru Kenyatta. In January this year, he was elevated as chairperson of cabinet committee in charge of implementation.
