The two are considered as close political allies.

Muthama is currently backing Kalonzo’s 2022 presidential bid.

However, Kalonzo and Muthama have on several occasions differed on political issues by taking different stands, thereby creating tension among their supporters.

The duo disagreed during a campaign meeting in Kitui County in 2017.

It was on August 21, 2016, when Muthama walked out of Kalonzo’s meeting in Mutumo, Kitui.

Muthama walked out of the meeting that had been organized by Kalonzo to mobilize Kitui locals to register as voters.

Trouble is said to have started when Kalonzo asked former Kitui Senator David Musila to work with the ex-Kitui Governor Julius Malombe so that the two could retain their seats.

Kalonzo’s advice is said to have angered Muthama, a close ally of Musila.

Muthama and Musila walked out on Kalonzo out of anger.

Kalonzo was left in the meeting with Malombe and Kibwezi East MP Jessica Mbalu.

It later emerged that Muthama wanted Kalonzo to endorse Musila’s gubernatorial bid.

Musila later quit Kalonzo’s party and unsuccessfully contested for the Kitui gubernatorial seat.

Malombe, on the other hand, lost the election to Charity Ngilu.
