Police Spokesman Charles Owino who confirmed the incident said the militants attacked the Border Patrol Unit border police post in Yumbis, Fafi sub-county, Garissa.

He said the suspected Al-Shabaab militants who were armed attacked the police post but they were immediately repulsed by security officers manning the facility.

The militants who are believed to have crossed over from Somalia destroyed a communications mast that serves the region before they attacked the police post.

Owino said there was an exchange of fire during the attack which led to three Al-Shabaab militants being killed and several others are believed to have escaped with serious injuries.

He added that the police are pursuing the militants who escaped following the night attack.

“Three Al Shabaab attackers were killed during the incident but our officers did not suffer a casualty,” said the police spokesman as quoted by capitalfm.co.ke.

The incident comes a week after seven officers lost their lives when their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Wajir.

Four officers survived the attack and they were taken to hospital for treatment.
