The ex-Bondo parliamentarian seems to be losing his political footing back in his Siaya County backyard following his recent twin losses in the parliamentary race to incumbent Gideon Ochanda.

Very few know that Odinga is also a large scale farmer who deals in white sorghum in his vast land in Siaya.

Oburu cultivates white sorghum in his 70-acre farm in Siaya, a venture that rakes him millions of shillings after each harvest.

Taking advantage of his contract with the East African Maltings company which had deployed him among others to supply the company with the product, he earns close to 3.3 million shillings after each two weeks.

The former Assistant Minister produces at least 100 tonnes of white sorghum in the large parcel of land, with the product being used in the production of Keg beer.

The leader who initially settled on maize and cotton was forced to shift to the drought-resistant crop.

“Sorghum being a traditional crop, does well in harsh climates similar to the one in Bondo. The region has been facing acute drought over the years and this has affected maize yields, exposing residents to starvation, and poverty” he is quoted by the Nation.

Oburu took over the leadership of Bondo in a by-election following the death of his father and former Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga in 1994.

He doubles up as the elder brother to opposition leader and African Union Special Envoy for Infrastructure Raila Odinga.

Oburu's story is enough evidence that to live the life you want, you must not solely rely on your formal employment.
