Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has come out to address claims he is behind a plot to remove Kipchumba Murkomen as the Senate Majority Leader.
There have been media reports that Jubilee Party was contemplating to relieve the Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator of his duties after he opposed the ongoing eviction of settlers in Mau Forest by the government.
The reports further indicate that Sakaja was eyeing the plum position currently occupied by Murkomen who has come under heavy criticism for allegedly referring to President Uhuru Kenyatta as 'mkora'.
"There are no plans to replace Kipchumba Murkomen in the Senate. Senate work is different from politics, we are not obsessed with positions and titles. Leadership is what you do with the position you have," the Nairobi Senator said in a tweet on Monday.
Nairobi City County Speaker Beatrice Elachi has also defended Sakaja, saying his statement criticising Murkomen's remarks over Mau were in order and had nothing to do with competition for the Senate Majority Leader seat.
"I don't think that Sakaja was eyeing the seat. Eyeing was done before elections. Maybe many people have the same views but do not have the braveness like that of Sakaja to write a letter," Elachi said in an interview with Citizen TV on Monday.
On Saturday Murkomen had said he was aware of plans to dethrone him but warned it was an exercise in futility.
"Let me warn my detractors that I know they are looking for any way to clinch my Senate majority seat, but they will not go anywhere. What I am doing is helping these people who are being evicted inhumanely," he said speaking in Narok South.
