Coincidentally, the attack comes exactly three years after the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF] lost over 200 soldiers in the worst ever attack on the Kenyan security personnel within and outside the country.

Rescue operations are currently ongoing in Nairobi with special forces from Kenya Defense Forces and the elite Recce Squad members deployed at the scene.

Hundreds of people have already been rescued with Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua leading the rescue operations.

In a statement to Al Jazeera, the terror group took responsibility for the attack, arguing that they are 'currently conducting an operation in Nairobi'.

"We are currently conducting an operation in Nairobi," the groups spokesman told the Middle East based TV Al Jazeera.  www.aljazeera.com/amp/news.

But Mr Mbugua, in a brief interview with reporters, did not confirm whether it was a terror attack but asked reporters to move away from the scene.

"We cannot confirm if it's a terrorism attack. We are ongoing with rescue operations as we pursue the attackers," the police boss said.

Even as the exact number of casualties at Riverside Drive remain unknown, Kenyans may ask themselves several questions especially surrounding the El Adde attack and that of Nairobi.

Three years later, the Government of Kenya and the KDF are yet to confirm the official figure of the soldiers who were killed in the deadly attack. Chief of Defense Forces General Samson Mwathethe, despite promising to release the exact figure, is yet to comply, two years later.

Also, it's not clear whether or not families of the victims were compensated by AMISOM, under which the KDF soldiers were working under.

Further, Tuesday Nairobi attack by suspected Al Shabaab militants, took place not far from the Westgate Mall, in which same militants attacked in 2013, killing at least 67 people.
