Some politicians are hiding money stuffed in sacks at their houses as they fear being trailed by crime busters, MP Maina Kamanda has said.
Kamanda said the politicians cannot take the money to the bank as they will be required to explain its source.
Speaking in Meru on Sunday, the MP claimed the said money is loot from government departments.
He asked church leaders to stop receiving liquid cash and to instead ask for cheques during harambees, arguing that the money being brought in envelops is dirty cash obtained through graft.
“In Murang’a, some bishops are forming a welfare group where they directly receive money from suspicious sources,” Kamanda said.
“As we speak now, there is money in the homes of some politicians that cannot be taken to banks because they will ask about the source. That is the money that is being taken to churches. Let us not glorify thieves and give the faithful hope that we can fight graft," he added.
Deputy President William Ruto has been on the receiving end over his generosity during church harambees, where he donates millions.
ODM Party leader Raila Odinga has also hit out at Ruto over the church fundraisers, urging the clergy to stop receiving cash donations from politicians.
“What we have been saying is that we have seen churches being used as avenues for laundering money acquired illegally. We cannot fight corruption if we cannot fight its tentacles. Every weekend people are going for harambees in churches and donating money with the faithful clapping for them without questioning the source of their money,” said Raila.
