The March 9th meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga at Harambee House, Nairobi may actually work in the favour of Deputy President William Ruto come 2022.
After the handshake, there has been disquiet in some political quarters especially Ruto's camp over how the two leaders met without the knowledge of Ruto and other NASA co-principals.
In fact Ruto was quoted saying he only came to know about the meeting after it had ended.
From March 9th, Ruto has been busy traversing the country, launching development projects and holding rallies.
His efforts to win more allies especially from the opposition have doubled and among those he has managed to capture are outspoken opposition MPs from Western and Coast. The two regions almost wholly voted for Raila in 2007, 2013 and 2017.
Also after the handshake, there were claims that Uhuru, may in 2022 support any other presidential candidate and not necessarily Ruto.
All these events have re-energized Ruto who, in his mind knows that he may have to go it alone in 2022 without Uhuru's support.
Coast MPs including Suleiman Dori (Msambweni), Kinango’s Benjamin Tayari, Kilifi North's Owen Baya and Jomvu MP Badi Twalib have all declared their support for Ruto.
Others from the region presently in support of the former Eldoret North's MP include Sharif Ali (Lamu East), Stanley Muthama (Lamu West), Ali Mbogo (Kisauni), Aisha Jumwa (Malindi) and Ali Wario (Grasen).
In Western, Ruto has the support of Wetangula, former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and a host of MPs kin on ensuring the DP clinches the presidency in 2022.
These leaders, if well-financed can do a phenomenal job in tilting the vote in opposition strongholds in Ruto's favour in 2022.
