Luo Nyanza brags of close to 5 million people, children and unregistered individuals included.
However, with the family being the most recognized units in the Luo culture, here are the two popular families in the region.
The Ogingas
The Oginga family originates from the nation's first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga who dropped his Adonijah Obadiah birth name for the rhyming African title.
The family has since remained at the top of both the region's and the national political arena, with his main heir, opposition leader Raila Odinga ascending to the level of Prime Minister.
Raila's longtime presidential ambition has made the family more popular, with his older brother Oburu Oginga as well contributing to the popularity after serving as the lawmaker for Bondo constituency.
Nyikwa Ramogi Ajwang'
Ramogi Ajwang' is the founding father of the Kenyan Luos, a great warrior and medicine man (ajuoga) who is believed to have led the community into the nation from neighbouring Uganda.
He is considered the father and grandfather of all Luos, hence the reason why Luos call each other 'Nyikwa Ramogi Ajwang' (grandchildren of Ramogi Ajwang').
He set up his home in Ramogi Hill (named after him) in Yimbo, Siaya county, making Luos consider themselves one big family founded by him.
Now you know.
