The suspect in the death of businesswoman Monica Kimani has for the first time narrated his ordeals behind Kamiti Maximum Prison.
Joseph Irungu alias Jowie has been in remand for 14 months now and his hopes to secure bond seems to be facing challenges each day.
In an interview with the Sunday Nation, Jowie hailed his parents for always being around for him, narrating their nasty experiences of travelling weekly to Nairobi.
While at Kamiti, he says, they are only given 10 minutes to talk to him at an isolated cell where he's being held solitary.
“At least every Tuesday, my parents come to see me. They travel from Nakuru to Kiambu every week,” he told the Sunday Nation.
“Since this is a maximum-security prison, you can imagine someone who left Nakuru at 6 am to come and see you early is given only ten minutes to talk to you. And it’s strictly 10 minutes.”
A few friends he notes, travel from as far as Dubai to just have only ten minutes with him at Kamiti Maximum Prison in which he describes prison warders as 'bullies'.
“Some of my friends think they’ll have 30 minutes or one hour of speaking with me. They are given 10 minutes and wonder: ‘We took a flight to come talk to you for 10 minutes, surely?’” he lamented.
However, the visits have been few and far between, referring to dozens of friends who have allegedly abandoned him throughout the incarceration period.
“Now is when you know people who care, people who matter, people who have your back,” he said.
He was charged alongside former TV anchor Jacque Maribe, who was released on bond. Justice James Wakiaga is yet to review Jowie's bond appeal.
