Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Prof. Margaret Kobia has advised unemployed university graduates to enrol themselves for vocational training so as to gain skills for self-employment.
Speaking during an interview at Citizen TV, Monday, Prof. Kobia lamented that the perception in the public domain that with a university education one is guaranteed employment has rendered the essence of getting education doubtful.
The CS noted that the system of education in the past created a way of thinking that working hard in school, passing examinations, going to the university and completing it successfully was a direct ticket to employment.
"Youth are getting disappointed because they have seen people go to university, come back home. They are not able to get good employment. They cannot engage in any productive activity," she noted.
"When we go out in the field, we always advise that, if one has gone to university and they had a B in secondary school, for example, there is nothing wrong going to these vocational training centres. After all the government has provided enough funding. HELB is giving out loans," added the CS.
However, the former Public Service Commission chairperson defended the critical role that education plays in the social, political and economic development of a country.
