It is believed people who drink a lot, eat a lot. This is because alcohol makes a person hungry.
According to Ginger Hultin, a dietitian and author of the blog Champagne Nutrition, alcohol has the ability to negatively influence leptin hormone, making a person to have a lot of appetite for food.
More so, she explained that alcohol tempers with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) (a hormone that inhibits food intake), which makes a person want to eat a lot.
Hultin also stated that another reason why people eat a lot after drinking is that alcohol decreases a person’s defenses and also lowers their inhibitions.
Hultin referred to other studies which have researched how alcohol affects a person’s eating habit. Some studies show that alcohol can increase appetite by stimulating a person’s brain’s hypothalamus.
“Animal research shows that independent of other factors when alcohol stimulates this part of the brain, it can trigger a sharp increase in appetite, which can lead to overeating. Instead of the body recognizing I just got a lot of calories, so I have fuel and I’m full, the opposite occurs. Though calories have been ingested, the brain is triggering more food intake,” said Hultin.
Also, alcohol affects the blood sugar levels. This will make someone crave more sugary foods and carbs.
