Deputy President William Ruto is hopeful that the approaching 2022 presidential race will be merely a race and nothing intense, it has emerged.

This, DP Ruto said when he met a group of the Kalenjin Council of Elders (Myoot) from Uasin Gishu county on Saturday last week.

Ruto hosted the elders at his Sugoi home in Turbo constituency, a meeting that was centred on his 2022 presidential bid.

According to the Standard, the DP said he hopes that the election will not divide the great Kalenjin community.

He also noted that each and every person eyeing any political seat should be allowed to do so, in line with the democracy Kenya is based on.

“He was clear nobody should be denied a chance to vie for a seat of their choice or told to step aside for another person. He said everyone is at liberty to express their democratic right because each contestant will eventually have their own supporters. He assured us the race will not split the community,” a leader who was present was quoted by the Standard.

The community recently raised concerns of a possible division as a result of the rivalry between DP Ruto and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.

The two are sworn rivals and have been trading political shots through their allies lately, each apparently seeking to outdo the other for the Rift Valley votes.

They are expected to face off in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
