During the event, a fight erupted between former area MCA Joshua Mwonga and the then nominated MCA Carol Musembi over who should speak last.

Mwonga wanted to speak last since he was the area MCA but Ms. Musembi ignored him and instead called the then Machakos Deputy Governor Benard Kiala to talk.

Furious Mwonga marched to the podium and grabbed the microphone from her.

Musembi attacked Mwonga, she slapped him to his surprise.

Mwonga's supporters charged at the MCA to defend their leader as those allied to Ms. Musembi intervened.

The two rival groups exchanged blows for several minutes.

Muthama and Kiala sat watching the drama unfold from the dais without moving a muscle.

Mwonga got the harsh reception because he was allied to Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua unlike the other leaders present who were allied to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Parents who had accompanied their children to the function also joined the melee.

"It's a taboo in the Kamba community for a man to be slapped by a woman, I was so angered since I have never been slapped by a woman," Mwongela said.

The leaders had attended a fundraising ceremony at Kitangani secondary school to purchase a school bus.
