Busia Senator Amos Wako has faulted the State Department for designation of his wife Flora Ngaira and son Julius Wako.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday designated Wako for the second time along with the two, although he did not give full disclosure of the matter.
The top US minister insisted that the move would allow Kenya to fight against corruption, adding that Washington DC is committed to helping Kenya.
“Today (Monday), the Department designates former Kenyan Attorney General Amos Sitswila Wako due to his involvement in significant corruption,” read Pompeo's statement quoted by the East African on Monday.
But in a spirited fight on Wednesday, Wako wondered why his family was being dragged to 'crimes purpotedly committed by him'.
The former Attorney General told reporters that the mention of his wife and son was in 'bad taste'.
He said he should be the one targeted since the other two never served in any government portfolio.
“My son is an adult and independent. Even if I committed the sin of corruption, which I emphatically deny, all members of my family should not be punished for my sins… the mention of my son and wife was in bad taste,” Amos Wako said.
In 2009, US confiscated Wako's passport over claims that he was an impediment to reforms that were initiated by the grand coalition government.
Interestingly, after handing over to Githu Muigai, Wako joined ODM party, which had linked him to stagnated reforms. He would later be elected as Busia senator on the ticket.
