The rivalry between Deputy President William Ruto and his political nemesis Raila Odinga intensified on Saturday.
Speaking in Migori on Friday, Odinga warned Ruto of impending radical changes, arguing that the DP could be thrown into political oblivion if he's not 'boarding' the peace deal famously called handshake.
“You cannot resist change. If you try to, it will overwhelm you. An idea whose time has come cannot be stopped," he said at Nyatike grounds.
“2022 is going to come and Kenyans are going to deal with it. We are dealing with Kenya now and we are determined to heal the 2017 political and electoral wounds," Odinga added.
Odinga is pushing for constitutional changes which could see the country adopting a parliamentary system of government, whose head of government is Prime Minister. Ruto has been opposing the formation.
On the other hand, while speaking in Turkana on Saturday, Ruto dismissed Raila's change warning, insisting that Kenyans are not interested in deals whose aim is to make leaders happy and comfortable.
"I want to tell those who are engaging in rhetorics. Those who are lecturing us about change, let them know that the change people want to hear is about good roads, clean water and electricity connections.
"Kenyans are not fools. They don't want to hear about changes that benefit politicians. This country does not belong to politicians alone," he said.
In the proposed changes, the president will be ceremonial like in many Commonwealth parliamentary set-up and is elected by MPs. The Majority party forms the government.
