Former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto has said that small parties should be allowed to thrive as a way of giving people more freedom to choose leaders independently.
His sentiment comes days after businessman Zedekiah Bundotich alias Buzeki ditched Deputy President William Ruto's camp for Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) under his stewardship.
In a series of tweets on Sunday, Ruto said his CCM party is unique and independent, adding that it focuses on promoting the ideology of devolved systems of government.
"Our position as a party is that CCM is an independent political party that has a unique philosophy and basis for its formation that includes entrenching devolution," he said.
The former Chepalungu lawmaker insisted that zoning of political parties should not be allowed because it hampers democratic processes in the country.
"It is also our position that the democratic space in Kenya be expanded to accommodate small parties to thrive, people be allowed to make independent choices of the leaders they want in future elections and zoning of political parties should not arise," he added.
Early this year, there were reports that Deputy President William Ruto was lobbying to have Mr Ruto given a slot in the cabinet, but the move is yet to be realised.
