The request came after he had promised container owners that their containers would be released within a span of three weeks.

"I don't have much to say, unless you guys are going to buy me lunch... I saw there's a place in here where people eat. I will come to join you next time," the head of state said to the laughter of those who were present.

The president has in the course of his presidency cultivated a reputation for connecting with ordinary people.

He dashed to the depot in Embakasi after complaints from business people with containers at the facility of delays, and held discussions with the officials.

The purpose of the impromptu visit was aimed at understanding what had occasioned the delays which traders lamented were affecting their operations.

Part of the reason of the delay, the president said, was caused by duplicitous consolidators who had the habit of lying to the deport's officials about the destination of the containers in a bid to avoid paying taxing.
