Ms Tsvangirai was a daughter to former Prime Minister and long time opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, a close ally of Kenya's former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

According to the MDC party, Vimbai died on Monday while undergoing treatment. She had been involved in an accident at Kwekwe last month, sustaining serious injuries.

"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sad passing on of Glen View South MP and Women's Assembly Secretary Hon. Vimbai Tsvangirai Java," the party said in a tweet.

Her death comes slightly over a year since her father passed on. Mr Tsvangirai succumbed to cancer in a South African hospital after months of treatment.

During his funeral, Mr Odinga, who attended the ceremony, described him as a 'great African who should have been accorded proper burial in Zimbabwe'.

“In this coffin here lies a great African, a great Zimbabwean, and a hero, who should have been accorded a proper hero’s burial in Zimbabwe,” Mr Odinga told mourners in Buhera, some 300 kilometres from Harare where the MDC leader was laid to rest.

Months after his death, President Robert Mugabe, his long time rival, was ousted by the military. His place was taken by Emmerson Chamangawa, a former Vice President.

MDC party, which has close ties with Kenya's ODM is currently under lawyer Nelson Chamisa. Chamisa disputed presidential polls held last year.

The deceased served as MP under her father's party. She was among leaders who pushed for change in Harare even during the time her father was alive.
