Chief Justice (CJ) David Maraga made residents of Kisumu County go into frenzy for several hours after he led Supreme Court judges in nullification of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in last year’s Presidential election on September, 1, 2017.
“A decision is hereby issued that the elections held on August 8, were not conducted in accordance with the Constitution and the applicable law. The results are therefore invalid, null and void,” Maraga ruled.
"Election is not an event but a process. After considering the totality of the entire evidence, we are satisfied that the elections were not conducted in accordance to the dictates of the Constitution and the applicable principles," he added.
Being opposition leader Raila Odinga’s stronghold, residents of Kisumu who all along were glued on TV screens to follow court proceedings, poured in the streets in masses to celebrate the land mark ruling.
Others cried. Others shouted. Others ran up and down. Others hugged, kissed and embraced, while others clenched their fists as a sigh of victory.
Still, others with dare devil spirits literarily walked naked in public.
The ruling set the tone for another presidential duel between Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta after 60 days.
The NASA leader, however, withdrew his candidature a few weeks to the repeat poll citing lack of a level playing field.
