A funeral service on Friday turned dramatic after East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Mpuru Aburi clashed with a Member of County Assembly (MCA) over the custody of the children of the deceased.
Aburi and nominated MCA Ruth Kananu disagreed on who should take care of the children; Riziki and Ebenezer, following the demise of their mother Mercy Kendi on May 7.
They took their differences to the burial of Kendi at Ithalii village, Imenti Central, leaving mourners in awe and watching helplessly, as they engagednin a ahouting match.
This was after both participated in the payment of her medical bills at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, and also shared the responsibility of buying her a breathing machine.
However, Aburi bashed the ward representative for not doing enough to save the life of the deceased when she was still alive, saying that he is able and ready to adopt her children.
“Let us not bring politics in the custody of the children. I am ready to adopt them and l plead to the family and the local administration to furnish me with their report on Monday so that l take them with me,” he was quoted by the Standard.
On her side, Kananu said that she was better placed to care for the children, thanks to her closeness to them as a resident of the area.
"To me Mercy was like a sister, l have known her for long and l have been with her all the time she has been in hospital and l stand a better chance to take care of her children,” she said.
Things would worsen after the MP overpowered the MCA when it came to family contributions where Kananu only gave Sh20, 000 as compared to Aburi's Sh100, 000.
