The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is now blaming Deputy President William Ruto and his allies for the biting famine affecting some parts of Rift Valley.
Addressing the press in Nairobi on Sunday, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna bashed Ruto and team for ignoring the situation and instead focusing on the 2022 election debate.
He questioned the group for remaining silent on the plight of their own people, at a time when some people have been reported dead in the famine which has been recorded in 12 counties.
"It's sad that the people who have declared themselves the defenders of the Kalenjin community have chosen not to address issues affecting their own people," he said.
"They have instead decided to focus their energies and resources in campaigns for an election three years away, and are using the remaining effort to attack ODM," added Sifuna.
He termed this a clear indication that the group is not out for the benefit of the region but is instead interested in realising political goals.
Sifuna urged Rift Valley residents to snub Ruto and his camp going forward, terming them a selfish lot without any good intentions for them.
"The people of Rift Valley can now see that they are in their own and their so-called leaders are selfish people who only think of themselves," he added.
The worst hit counties so far are Turkana and Baringo, in the famine affecting about 900, 000 people across the 12 counties in the arid and semi-arid regions.
