Journalists around the country have been urged to be on standby each and every time they go out to cover Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko due to his recent public outbursts.

Last week, Sonko shocked many people at the Moi Girls High School in Nairobi, when he claimed that he knew late Kibra MP Ken Okoth sired a child with Nairobi County nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Ann Thumbi.

Erick Oduor, the Secretary General of Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ), has urged journalists to develop a strategy on how to cover Governor Sonko.

“Sonko’s character and behavior is actually already known by the media. Anybody who wants to give Sonko a mic when it is a live broadcast should always be on the standby and I will recommend that Sonko should actually be given a delayed signal,” said Oduor while appearing on NTV’s Press Pass Show on Monday.

“We don’t break news the way Sonko did it. When Sonko was breaking this news, as much as it could have excited members of the public but let us also know that it could have caused harm to other people, especially the immediate family members,” added Oduor.

His sentiments were echoed by fellow panelists Media Council of Kenya Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Omwoyo and Julie Masiga who is the Commissioning Editor, The Conservation Africa.
