Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has been the latest notable politician to back the constitutional amendment debate which is garnering more heat as days go by.
The referendum push has been a hot debate since its launch by opposition leader Raila Odinga after his March 9, 2018 truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking on Thursday, Nyong'o seconded the push, stressing on the need for the nation to revert to the parliamentary governance system from the current presidential one.
He said that there is need to share power, tame the executive, and ensure that 'power doesn't get in the head of the president and the deputy'.
Speaking during the 35th sitting of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) in Kisumu, he also stressed on the need for the strengthening of the of the devolution system.
However, he added, the two issues should be held separately to avoid confusion, and the governance system shift given the first priority.
“We should not introduce two weighty issues in the referendum. Let us not mix issues of structure of devolution with the choice between presidential and parliamentary. We should put premium on achieving parliamentary system,’’ he was quoted by the People Daily.
The 14-member BBI taskforce was formed by Uhuru and Raila after their handshake as proof of their joint goodwill for the country.
Its role is to gather information from Kenyans and offer the way forward as the nation seeks to overcome recurrent political and social wrangles.
