Deserving beneficiaries from Bura constituency who perform dismally in their studies will not receive CDF bursaries, area MP Ali Wario has said.
Speaking on Tuesday when he distributed cheques worth 15 million shillings for bright students from the poor family background, Wario said that it has come to the attention of the board that some candidates register for their national exams and don’t attend classes.
Wario said that the board will not only give bursaries to candidates from poor family backgrounds as has been the case before but will look into their performance over the years, school attendance and absenteeism.
“There are candidates who are bodaboda operators in Bura and other centers across the constituency who have registered for their exams and will appear at the end of the year to seat for the exams. We shall lock them out,” Wario said.
“We shall work closely with their teachers to ensure that these pupils or students who don’t attend classes and are chronic absentees do not receive bursaries. We want hard working pupils interested in bettering their lives to benefit,” he added.
The Bura legislator said that he will personally monitor the performance of the beneficiaries in an effort to weed the kitty of crooks that don’t deserve bursaries.
Wario said he was shocked to learn that some businessmen took advantage of the weakness in the issuance of the bursaries to benefit from the kitty.
Wario said out of 5,000 applicants only 1,900 met the criteria that have now been set by the board in this year’s bursary awards adding that it delayed the release of the cheques.
