Police in Nakuru on Tuesday arrested a couple for failing to take their children to school despite government policy that all children must attend school.
The couple, who hail from Lake View Estate, Nakuru, are accused of failing their responsibility of ensuring that their children are in school and that the younger ones receive proper healthcare.
Confirming the incident, area chief George Ng’ang’a said after receiving a call from Racetrack Primary teacher, concerning a pupil who had missed school for several days, they acted by arresting the couple.
They were taken to Bondeni police station for interrogation.
The couple was identified as Stanley Macharia, 41, and hiw wife, 34.
The chief said the couple's first born child who is a KCPE candidate is also missing school.
The children are also in poor health as the couple's religious beliefs are against receiving medical care.
“I received a call from one of the teachers at Race track primary that one pupil had missed school for several days so I went to the home and after questioning the parents, they had no reason to give hence arrested and took them to Bondeni Police station,” said Chief Ng’ang’a.
The chief warned parents against keeping their children at home when they are supposed to be in school.
“I will follow up the case personally as this is a case that needs guidance and counseling but let me warn parents who are neglecting their responsibilities that the law will not spare them,” said Ng’ang’a.
