Gone are the days when the students at the University of Eldoret used to scramble for the hostels.
Almost every student in the university will be in school a day before the reporting date to secure a room. However, the situation has rapidly changed and the students are now leaving the school premises at an apace.
Here are some of the reasons why the students are vacating the hostels;
Since cooking on the premises was prohibited, the students were denied the chance to make their own meals hence depending wholly on hotel food. The students were never given an alternative such as building a kitchen, like in some universities, where they could make their own meals. Therefore, many students left the hostels to rent houses out the school. This is still a reason why the students in the hostels, mostly first years, are vacating the premises.
Another reason is the personal urge to have all the freedom that students believe the campus is associated with. Staying in the hostels, the students believe, you cannot spend enough time will your partner due to 10 to 10 rule. The students cannot hold parties in the hostels. Therefore, most of the students have opted to rent houses outside the school to have all the freedom they desire.
The cleanliness of the hostel lavatories is also a reason why the students are vacating the hostels. Most of the toilets are not well maintained and students find it difficult to use them. The fear of contracting diseases associated with hygiene drives the students away from the hostels.
Lastly, the students want to start an independent and responsible life. Most students after campus will not go back to their parents but they will have to start new lives. Therefore, they are after starting that life as earlier as now when they still have the support of their guardians or parents.
