Foreign nationals seeking internship opportunities in any United Nations-affiliated organizations in Kenya will now secure slots for free, a move that will open doors for more foreign applications.
This is after Interior CS Fred Matiang'i announced having reached a decision to do away with fees that could be paid to the government by all foreigners seeking the internships.
In a Gazette Notice (No.3619) dated April 18, 2019, the CS stated that foreign nationals were now exempted from the internship pass fees.
"The cabinet secretary for interior and co-ordination of national government exempts foreign nationals seeking internship programs with United Nations Organizations in Kenya from the requirement of payment of internship pass fees," the notice reads in part.
Below is a snippet of the Gazette Notice.
An internship or research pass the document issued to persons seeking to enter and remain in Kenya for the purpose of undertaking an internship or academic research within the country.
The applicants must be accepted as an intern or researchers in an institution within Kenya in order to be issued with the pass.
Initially, this was at a fee that has since been scrapped off by CS Fred Matiang'i.
Locally, institutions such as the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) charge Kenyan students an internship fee of up to at least Sh3,000 or more as a precaution for equipment they use during their training.
