Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has made a U-turn on the constitutional amendment issue, even after initially supporting the proposed referendum.
The leader now says that its not the time to discuss such matters as there are better issues to be addressed, among them the biting hunger in some parts of the nation.
Speaking on KTN's Point Blank on Wednesday, he stressed on the need for the Kenyan leadership and citizens to fully concentrate on fighting the runaway corruption and the health crisis before talking about the referendum issue.
“When we went into the last election, ANC was very clear that there was need to review the Constitution.
However, not at this point in time, when there is a humanitarian crisis of lack of food, the crisis in the health sector where people are sharing beds and the massive corruption cases.
I think you will not be wise if you talk about referendum now. Deal with the humanitarian crisis, deal with corruption first,” the Former Deputy Prime Minister was quoted by the Standard.
He seemed to agree with Deputy President William Ruto's quarters that the said changes are largely aimed at dividing leadership positions among a group of political elites.
"The way it (referendum) is being propagated it makes politicians look bad. People are dying and you want to talk about a referendum to share positions," added Mudavadi.
He advised that this time should be used to concentrate on the Building Bridges Initiative co-founded by President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga in March 2018.
The calls for a referendum are being headed by Raila and his team and have also been repeatedly endorsed by the Head of State as the best way to settle recurrent post-election clashes.
