Thoya was arrested and detained on Thursday for allegedly leading illegal demonstrations.

The ward representative led Mikindani matatu operators in a demonstration, decrying harassment from the County inspectorate and traffic officers.

Hundreds of matatu operators plying the CBD-Mikindani route participated in the protests, demanding for a permanent bus stop.

They decried harassment from County officials and traffic police, after they were moved from the usual Yukay bus stop at Mwembe Tayari by the county inspectorate to a bus station in the same area.

"We have been facing daily conflict with the County askaris and traffic police for the harassment and frequent arrest leading to court cases day by day for not having a specified stage."

Addressing matatu operators at Kijiweni after his release, defiant Thoya vowed to stand firm and fight for the rights of the operators.

He said they would go back to working from the Yukay-KFA bus stop regardless of the County inspectorate's warning until a designated stage is set aside for all Mikindani matatus.

"Big up to all MCAs of Mombasa county and county secretary Cs Thoya and youth leader mikindani Matatu terminus Ericko-youth leader Uwezo Sacco manager (Mr Ken) for being in solidarity during my detention at the central police," said Thoya after the release.

He emphasised that a bus stop must be built for his operators.

"This is soon coming to a halt, Mikindani stage will soon be built, allocated and branded permanently at the CBD after this long miss treatment," vowed the MCA.
