A section of County Assembly Speakers from the Rift Valley region now say ongoing push for constitutional change will not see the light of the day if it's meant to create positions that will benefit a few individuals.
Addressing a media briefing in Eldoret town, Saturday, the Speakers led by Uasin Gishu's David Kiplagat claimed there are individuals pushing for the referendum with an ill intention of blocking Deputy President William Ruto from clinching the top seat.
“We cannot accept a referendum that has been made somewhere to create positions for people so that you can undermine others, you cannot destroy the bridge so that you build another bridge,” said Kiplagat, who is also the chair of the regions' County Assembly Speakers.
He noted that they will only support a referendum that will be issue-based and driven on the more allocation of funds to the grassroots, thus enhance devolution.
“The only constitutional amendments that we shall accept as counties from Rift Valley and the entire country are what it will enhance devolution and support Wanjiku,” Kiplagat reiterated pointing out that the counties will be playing a major role in the endorsement of the constitutional change.
