Residents of Ugenya constituency on Sunday promised to back area lawmaker Chris Karan for the seat in the approaching by-election.

Karan whose August 2017 elections as annulled by the Supreme Court in December will be seeking to defend his seat on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

According to Rarieda lawmaker Otiende Amollo who is part of the ODM brigade that has been campaigning for Karan, the people on Sunday vowed to support Karan.

In a Facebook statement after a rally in Kolali Market, he said that the residents promised to rally behind Karan who also enjoys the backing of party leader Raila Odinga.

"We were led by Senator James Orengo in Ugenya Constituency delegates meeting at Hafumbre and then held a rally at Kolali Market in Ugenya West Ward," he said.

"The people declared and promised their support for out candidate Chris Karan. Let's confirm Karan as the MP on April 5," he wrote on his Facebook account.

Karan is expected to face off with among others, Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) party's David Ochieng' who is his main rival and a former area lawmaker.

Karan's election was nullified after a successful appeal by Ochieng'.
