Police in Taveta, Taita Taveta county are holding a fellow officer for allegedly shooting and killing a reveler at a local drinking joint.
Police Constable David Gitahi who is attached to Taveta Police Station reportedly shot and killed Esau Juma at Rockland Pub on Friday night.
The incident was confirmed by Taveta Divisional Police Commander Lawrence Maloa.
He said that the suspect shot the deceased thrice in the chest using a gun which he had been given to conduct night patrols in the area.
The police boss said that there was no argument between the two before the murder. Police further suspect that Juma could be one of the robbery suspects who shot dead a flying squad officer in the town some days ago.
"According to the witnesses, there was no argument. He just shot him saying he was a robbery suspect,” he was quoted by the Saturday Nation.
Officer Maloa said that investigations have been launched into the matter, to establish the cause behind the incident.
"We are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident,” he added.
The suspect who admitted committing the crime claiming that he was under the influence of alcohol is being held at the Taveta Police Station.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Taveta Sub County Hospital morgue.
