Some people could have been born blind or suffered a disease that robbed them of their sight.

According to a research from the University of Chicago, women are more prone to go blind than men.

However, apart from diseases https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4326058/, there are things we engage in or go through in life that may render us blind.

Here are unexpected ways that women can be robbed of their sight:

1. Sleeping with contact lenses. To err is human and most contact lens wearers may doze off with their contacts and forget to remove them.

Doing it once or twice isn't harmful until it becomes a habit.

Experts say that sleeping with the contact lens on deprives the eyes of oxygen thus blocking the cornea from working properly.

Due to that, your eyes metabolism will be shut down and potentially causing blindness.

I'm sure you wouldn't want to have an impaired vision just because you were too sleepy to remove your contact lenses.

2. Staring directly at the sun.

However normal it looks, staring directly at the sun can cause blindness.

This is because it is almost like lasering your retina.

Although the scarring may heal for some people, it may be different to others.

The same case applies to welders who may stare at the welding flames directly.

That is why welders need to put on protective gear while working.

However, it depends on the duration of exposure.

3.Smoking

Experts say that smokers are two times likely to get macular generation which causes blindness than non-smokers.

They are also three times likely to get cataracts that cloud the eye lens than non-smokers.

4.Menopause

Study shows that menopause doesn't only wreck havoc to your body temperature and mood.

Unfortunately, you may also go blind.

People undergoing menopause are predisposed to glaucoma, an eye disease that damages the optic nerve thus leading to blindness.

However, the condition is common in women who undergo menopause before the age of 45.
