Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Achesa has challenged the Kalenjin community to rally behind Deputy President William Ruto so as to ensure he succeeds President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Speaking during the burial of 2015 400 meters World Hurdles Champion Nicholas Bett at Simat, Kapseret constituency on Thursday, Achesa said DP Ruto has more realistic chances of winning the presidency compared to any other Kalenjin leader.
He further termed Ruto as a bull that has sired twice and which should be given chance to lead the country.
“Na nyinyi huwa ni wafugaji na kwa kawaida hua mna ndume na kadume. Ruto ni ndume ambayo imezalisha mara mbili, 2013 na 2017 lakini nasikia pia mna kandume ambayo bado inarukia mama,” said Achesa in an apparent comparison of Ruto to Senator Moi loosely translated as, “You are livestock farmers and you always have a bull and a small bull. Ruto is a bull that sired in 2013 and 2017 but I also hear you have a small bull…”
DP Ruto is credited for helping President Kenyatta secure wins against opposition chief Raila Odinga in 2013 and 2017 general elections by ensuring the Kalenjin community vote as a block.
It has widely been expected that Senator Moi, son to retired President Daniel Moi would vie against Ruto in 2022.
Moi has however not publicly declared interest for the seat and it remains a matter of wait and see.
