On Saturday former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa changed his political tune in favour of Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi.
Rashid Echesa has been an ardent supporter of Deputy President William Ruto and he even claimed that his sacking as the cabinet secretary was as a result of his support to DP Ruto.
The timing of this announcement, however, leads to a question whether former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale played role both directly and mostly indirectly.
Before Boni Khalwale 'officially' defected to Jubilee recently, Echesa looked to be the highest ranked Jubilee allied leader from Western Kenya, making him a strategic ally.
When Echesa was sacked, Boni Khalwale defected to Jubilee and since his defection, he has been arguably the most vocal and looks the most experienced supporter of DP Ruto in Western Kenya. That effectively suppressed Echesa's status as Ruto's point man.
This is clear by DP Ruto's conduct with his recent visit to the Western region, which have seen Khalwale play important roles.
Now, Echesa changing tune seems to be just a way of remaining relevant in politics because he no longer have a voice in Jubilee as far as politics is concerned.
Shifting to ANC will give him the political relevance he may be needing, especially as a way to counter Boni Khalwale's rising influence in Western Kenya Jubilee politics.
