The 7am accident involving an 11 seater matatu and a lorry occurred along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The two vehicles were heading from Nairobi to Mombasa.

According to eyewitnesses, the matatu driver was attempting to overtake other vehicles before a truck hit it from behind.

"The matatu driver tried to overtake other vehicles unsuccessfully before he was hit from behind by a lorry," said a passenger who was going to work.

Confirming the incident, Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim said the three victims died on the spot.

"Two occupants from the lorry and a passenger from the matatu died on the spot," said Maalim in a phone interview.

He said those who sustained injuries were taken to Makindu Sub-County hospital for treatment.

The county commissioner warned motorists against flouting traffic rules.

"Motorist should be conscious of other road users and adhere to traffic rules in a bid to avoid accidents," he said.

This comes just days after an accident in Kibwezi claimed two lives.
