A man in Muthurwa market in Nairobi is making a living from selling edible stones.
Kileva Malondo, 42, is known for his delicious stones which pregnant women are much in love with.
His business yard is located in Muthurwa market, where both men and women flock in for the magical clay stones. He has been in this business for a long time. Surprisingly, he never did nutrition or medicine.
He claims women had been reported to love the stone.
After his wife was pregnant in 2011, he realized she loved very much eating the stone which could be found in distant towns.
He invested in making sure they get it in plenty around them in Nairobi. The magical stone is reported to contain a lot of iron and calcium which women crave for.
Unlike those in well-off homes, the man sells to the middle class and lower-end families from across the city including hoods like Kibera and Mathare.
He gets the rare stone from Muranga County. He then repackages the stones in piles of 50-kilo sacks and into other small bunches. One 50 kilo sack goes for Sh800 while small bunches go for Sh10.
Malondo however notes that most Nairobi women are pregnant between the months of March and May and again between September and December, as this is when he makes maximum profits.
He has great plans to expand his business across the country so that pregnant women enjoy this nutritious stone.
