Migori County Governor Okoth Obado has admitted that he had a sexual relationship with slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
A detective who has seen a statement the governor recorded at the Kisumu DCI offices told this writer in confidence that ‘Obado confessed they had a relationship and the baby the girl was carrying was his’.
“He made things easier by owning the pregnancy. His confession left the detectives viewing him differently,” the source said.
A source close to the governor said he (Obado) was advised by his lawyers to tell detectives the truth concerning his relationship with Sharon ‘to make things easier for him’.
Sharon’s mother Melinda Auma, had earlier told journalists that her daughter had confided the father of her unborn child was Governor Okoth Obado.
Auma claimed the daughter told her of pressure from certain quarters to procure an abortion.
Lawyer Cliff Ombeta, who has taken up the matter to represent Obado, said the love romance between the embattled governor and the late student was an ‘open secret’ to county residents.
Friends of Sharon at the Rongo University also told journalists of their colleague who bragged about ‘carrying mtoto wa county’.
On Wednesday, the Migori county boss called for a presser where he condemned the cruel murder of the seven-month pregnant girl.
He distanced himself and his family from the murder.He was flanked by his wife Hellen Okoth, son Jerry Okoth and daughter Hellen Okoth.
