As the country marked the 40th memorial service of Kenya’s founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, President Uhuru Kenyatta did the unthinkable.
Accompanied by his security detail and leaders among them Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Uhuru had a brief walk in the city.
In a video shared by Sonko on his Facebeook page Wednesday, the President who was also accompanied by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta is seen making some rounds in one of the streets in the city.
It is a rare sight to have the President take a walk in the streets of Nairobi given his tight schedule and security.
Uhuru, later headed to the mausoleum within Parliament buildings where his father who doubled up as the country’s first President was buried.
A memorial service was later held at the Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi. Among those who attended is opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Raila described the late Kenyatta as a selfless leader who made huge sacrifices for the good of the country.
Together with other icons who fought for independence, Kenyatta steered Kenya to independence in 1963.
He succumbed to a heart attack in Mombasa on August 22, 1978. He will be remembered for his effort in pushing for self-rule among Kenyans.
