It is said that politics is a game of interests. And as such, there are no permanent enemies or friends but only permanent interests.
As the country jogs towards 2022, Kenya is witnessing realignments in the political scene as politicians position themselves for power.
This has seen many figures who once worked together, and even elected on the same party ticket, turn into bitter rivals.
Mike Sonko Vs Senator Johnson Sakaja
In 2017, Nairobi’s dynamic duo of Governor Mike Sonko and Senator Johnson Sakaja toured the city and displayed unmatched chemistry.
Running on a Jubilee party ticket, the two leaders promised Nairobians a good working relationship as they flexed to send Evan Kidero packing.
But that is no longer the case, when he appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee, Sonko accused Sakaja of playing witch-hunt politics because he wants to run for the top seat in 2022.
Raila Odinga and William Ruto
Within the gates of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party, William Ruto was in 2007 a master planner and a skilled mobilizer who was adored and praised by everyone starting by party leader Raila Odinga.
In the election year, he had made Raila ‘smell’ State House – as many say.
But that was then as today, the two are harsh critics of each other. Their supporters too have become rivals.
Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru and Woman Rep Purity Ngirici
Word had it that Ngirici partly funded Waiguru’s campaigns for Kirinyaga governor race in 2017, but the two do not see eye to eye today. Waiguru accuses Ngirici of sabotaging her work because she wants to run for the top seat in 2022.
