Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja has vehemently opposed plans by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and the Nairobi county government to demolish multi-million Seefar apartments in Nyayo Highrise in Kibera constituency.
The environmental authority plans to pull down the residential apartments on grounds that they are constructed on riparian land.
According to Sakaja, NEMA and the Nairobi county government are not considering the interests of the tenants as it plans to bring down the apartments.
“It is unfortunate that the interests of the owners and even tenants are being ignored in the name of protecting the environment," Sakaja said on Thursday.
Sakaja states that it is unfair for the government to approve a building and come later to demolish it.
“The construction of these apartments was approved by the same NEMA officials who now want to demolish it," Sakaja added.
Sakaja in company of several MP’s and MCAs on Thursday held a brief meeting with the owners and tenants of the apartment.
