Over twenty governors are currently serving for their second terms and the constitution dictates that no one will hold the office of the governor for more than two terms.

As the 2022 general elections approach, these governors will have to make a choice between remaining politically relevant or quitting politics for other interests.

They also have the freedom to vie for other positions including Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), Member of Parliament (MP) or Senate.

However, no governor has displayed any interest of running for the ‘lesser’ seats but a few including Machakos governor Alfred Mutua have hinted that they will be vying for the country’s presidential seat.

In Rift Valley, these governors are serving for their last terms and Kenyans are closely monitoring their next political moves;

Jackson Mandago

He is the governor of Uasin Gishu county. Mandago is a staunch supporter of DP Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid. He might opt to actively support Ruto’s presidential campaigns as he is not likely to vie for any other seat.

Josephat Nanok

The governor for Turkana county recently handed over the position of Chairman for the Council of Governors (CoG) and his close relationship with Raila Odinga might land him in Odinga’s camp in 2022.

Kericho’s  Paul Chepkwony and his Narok counterpart Samuel Tunai will not be eligible to defend their seats in the coming general elections also as they are serving their second terms in office.
