A church in Nyanza has vowed to reignite male circumcision campaign in Luo Nyanza.
The Nomiya Church has been circumcising all newborn boys, born to the church faithful since its establishment 100 years ago.
The church which is headquartered in Kisumu County has been operating on boys aged 8 days maintains that it is doing the same in line with dictates of the Old Testament of the Bible.
According to Archbishop Moses Oketch, apart from its religious benefits, the cut is also good for the day to day lives of the initiates, especially their sexual life.
"Circumcision helps in reducing cases of HIV. Other churches have been silently doing it and we believe it is a good initiative,” he told the Thursday Standard.
He urged the community and the entire nation to embrace circumcision to aid in the fight against the spread of HIV and Aids.
“Even though we are doing it for religious purposes, people should embrace it to help with the fight to reduce HIV infections,” he said.
The church has been doing the same despite being fought by traditionalists and began long before the launch of the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC).
Luos were traditionally not circumcised and unlike most of the remaining communities, had their six lower teeth uprooted as their rite of passage.
