Although Dr Matiang'i is yet to declare interest in succeeding Governor John Nyagarama, all indications are that he is among top contenders.

"He has made up his mind. He is ready to move in the tough and murky politics of the region. That Isaac guarantee," an insider privy to the minister's campaigns said in confidence.

But already, Matiang'i is facing hostility from experienced local politicians, some who have openly welcomed him to the race.

ODM treasurer Timothy Bosire and Borabu MP Ben Momanyi are clear favourite and the two have already sharpened their ammunition towards Matiang'i.

In recent weeks, Bosire has been going head-on with the minister, accusing him of 'hiding' in PR gimmicks at the expense of taxpayers money.

"He has been implicated on Ruaraka land. Let him come out clean and explain how he presided over massive theft of Sh1.5 billion. However, he is free to join the race."

And Mr Momanyi on his side, is carefully walking on Nyagarama's footsteps, with a section of residents accusing him for Nyagarama's misdeeds.

When he shared podium recently at Menyenya High School with Matiang'i, Momanyi was quick to dismiss his local political ambitions, instead asking him to concentrate on national politics.

"You should go for presidency. These local things just leave it to us. We know how to fix it," said Momanyi.

The two politicians have heightened their campaigns with Bosire pitching tent at Momanyi's Borabu strongholds.

For Matiang'i, he has reportedly been working closely with teachers network which was created by his brother,John Matiang'i who serves as KNUT treasurer.
