Mvita Member of Parliament Abdulswamad Nassir Shariff has scored a major victory in the National Assembly.
The National Assembly members supported his amendment to the Kenya Merchant Shipping Act by voting in the affirmative.
The amendment stipulated that a terminal at the Port of Mombasa should be run by a shipping line owned 100% by the government.
In a wednesday night Facebook post, the Mvita legislator expressed his gratitude to Members of Parliament who supported the amendment.
"Parliament has today voted YES to my amendment to the Kenya Merchant Shipping Act which once assented into law will mean only a whole Government owned Shipping Line can run a terminal at the Port.
"This shall translate into Kenya owning ships and engaging Seafarers without necessarily giving out the Port to any foreign entities by sale or lease. I thank my colleagues for a vibrant session and deliberations," Abdulswamad Nassir Shariff's Facebook post read.
The vote comes amid a raging debate in the coast about the privatisation of a terminal at the Mombasa Port.
A section of Coastal leaders have strongly opposed attempts at privatisation, saying that it will hurt Mombasa residents.
Governor Ali Joho said, during this year's Eid Baraza that he would seek an audience with President Uhuru Kenyatta over privatisation of terminals.
