Kenya has never been to World Cup final at all but in the last two finals in 2014 and now 2018, Kenyans has been represented by players of Kenyan heritage.
And probably this was the main reason as to why many Kibera, Mathare and most Kenyans were behind Sweden's national team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Sweden had a 'Kenyan' player, John Alberto Guidetti who spent most of his early life playing barefoot football on the dirt pitches and occasionally on the grass in the slum areas of Kibera and Mathare.
The 26-year old who credits his career development to playing in Kenya was in the company of his father Mike, who came to Kenya as a professional teacher, his mother Susanne and his sister Carmen.
"That period was very important for my development, both on and off the pitch. I played football barefoot in the slum areas of Nairobi and I came into contact with local people and their culture. I still have a strong link with Kenya and every time I go back there I always get a warm welcome," Guidetti said on his time living in Kibera as quoted by footballing website Inside Futbol.
Guidetti has since played for several big clubs in Europe including Manchester City, Burnley and Stoke City in England, Celtic FC and Fayenoord in Scotland and Netherlands respectively.
In Spain, Guidetti has played for Celta de Vigo and currently represents Deportivo Alavés on a four-year deal.
