Opposition leader Raila Odinga has for decades now retained his image as the biggest and most influential political figure in the Luo Nyanza region.
Consequently, his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has grown to become almost the only political party in the area, on whose ticket any candidate is almost assured of a win.
However, a section of politicians would prove this wrong in the 2013 general polls, when they penetrated to power on alien parties, beating ODM candidates.
Here they are;
1.James Onyango K’Oyoo
The Muhoroni lawmaker first came to office in the 2013 polls riding on the little-known People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
This followed a few losses before in the hands of former MP and Odinga ally Ayiecho Olweny.
In 2013, however, he beat the former Assistant Cabinet Minister for Education who was vying on the Orange party ticket.
2. Olago Aluoch
The longtime ally of Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula clichéd the Kisumu West seat in 2007 on the ODM ticket, but later fell off to join Wetangula’s Ford-Kenya party.
In 2013 he faced the ballot on the bloc which is less influential in the region, and went ahead to win for the second time.
In 2017, the lawyer again beat ODM’s John Awiti to secure his third term.
3. Zacharia Okoth Obado
The Migori Governor is currently at loggerheads with the Orange party due to his divergent ideologies and rebellious nature.
Before clinching the seat in 2013 as the first Governor of the county, he was a member of the PDP party with which he beat ODM’s Akong’o Oyugi.
This was after he accused Raila of imposing his candidate on the people, courtesy of his 6-piece request to the voters.
Upon joining ODM, he went ahead to beat former Cabinet Minister Ochillo Ayacko to clinch the party ticket before again beating him as an independent candidate.
