During the event, DP Ruto narrated his humble beginnings, recalling how his father bought him his first pair of shoes at Sh60 in 1981.

"In 1980 when I was in standard seven preparing for CPE, I went to do exams barefoot. It was nature. My first shoe was bought in 1981 for Sh60. I am saying this because the gentleman who didn't have shoes is sitting at the high table today," he said.

The DP further noted that he was privileged to dine in the high table with the son of the nation's founding president.

However, according to Wambugu, it was wrong for Ruto to insinuate that Uhuru holds the position due to the fact that he comes from a privileged family.

"Never ever, in their presence and even if true, insinuate that your boss holds the position because of privilege and nothing else. It is an insult that they won't forget, nor forgive’ - (stolen)," wrote the MP in a Facebook post on Thursday.

"It makes it even worse when you do it before the world, and then go ahead and explain how you, on the other hand, have come from so far - and are blessed by God - to the point you are now sharing the same table with those who got there through privilege," he added.

Dr Ruto has been campaigning for the 2022 polls on grounds that he was born and raised in a poor family. He has taken the 'hustler tag' as his campaign slogan.

On the contrary, he has often taken a swipe at ODM leader Raila Odinga and Baringo Senator Gideon Moi over perceptions that they belong to dynasties.
