Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s love for his late father Gideon Kioko Kivanguli was insurmountable.
On September 15, 2015, Sonko became the talk on social media after laying his father to rest in a casket encrusted with Gold and Diamond flakes.
The motorcade ferrying remains of the deceased from Lee Funeral Home caused a traffic snarl up on Nairobi roads to his final resting place in Mua Hills farm, Machakos County.
On Saturday, Sonko commemorated the third anniversary of his late father.
The first term governor offered Machakos residents a free 3-day medical service.
"In Mzee Kivanguli’s honor, I’m still holding a free medical camp at Kathimani Primary School opposite my Mua Hills home. Since Thursday, hundreds of patients with chronic diseases have so far been treated and others with complicated diseases referred to hospitals for further medication," Sonko said.
Sonko’s rise to power has not been easy.
His early life was not a walk in the park considering the poverty-stricken family he was born in.
He, however, defied all odds to become one of the most powerful Kenyans at the moment.
Today, he is the governor of the county that hosts the nation’s capital.
